The Department of Motor Vehicles may make available upon request certain class 1 to 5 tires that have an actual load and/or maximum size of 16" x 14". For example, the Department may provide tires that have an actual load of approximately .65 pound. or 16" x 16" wide. It is the customer's responsibility to know the load that the tire will carry. A customer who requests tires larger than are allowable under this document as a condition of the transaction will incur the cost of those tires. The Customer must also pay a special fee of $75.00 per tire which is paid in advance by check or money order. All checks should be made payable to "California Department of Motor Vehicles" and should be drawn on a U. S. bank such as the "Bank of the United States". This fee requires the customer to first pay for the fee and/or the tires. The department may also make available certain tires such as special duty tires as needed. The department is not responsible for damage incurred during normal use. This document does not provide for the sale of vehicles equipped with tires that are not in vehicle compliance. If the customer has damage on a customer vehicle that is caused by not having tires that are in vehicle compliance, the State of California will hold the customer responsible for the costs of repairing any such damage and the State of California will be entitled to reimbursement out of the State General Fund. The department may refuse to issue a special license plate or registration if the department has determined that the driver is not a resident of the State of California or the vehicle being registered represents a commercial motor vehicle, as defined in the Department of Motor Vehicles' commercial fleet registration guidelines. Special License Plates for Certain Vehicles. Section 17500 of the Government Code requires, in the name of the People of the State of California, that a person be issued a special license plate to purchase a commercial motor vehicle, as defined, if the following criteria are met: the vehicle being registered includes a load of 16, 14, or heavier. The department may offer special license plates for all commercial passenger vehicles, as defined, registered in this state, or a combination commercial passenger vehicle and trailer or semitrailer, as defined, and that: have been registered in this state. have not been subject to a previous vehicle registration renewal or suspension in this state due to failure to obtain a vehicle registration. the manufacturer or seller of the vehicle or trailer
